The Art of Negotiating

During the interview, Maarten spoke extensively about negotiation dynamics. He explained how a successful negotiation is about creating a win-win situation and improving the relationship between the parties involved. This is at odds with "egotiation", where the ego stands in the way of a solution. When people really want to communicate with each other, shared interests will always arise. It is precisely these shared interests that are essential for sustainable and long-term solutions. Maarten therefore advocates an "outside-in approach": first understand what is important to the other person, and only then make sure you are being understood.
