In a recent episode of Sven op 1, our Head of Strategy, Maarten van Rossum, discussed the latest developments ahead of the NATO Summit on June 23–24. According to him, it’s time for the so-called E3—Germany, France, and the UK—to act more decisively as a political backbone within Europe. Initiatives like the "Coalition of the Willing" could also provide a practical solution for fostering unity across the continent. After all, the old joke still rings true: “Who do you call when you want to call Europe?”

Looking toward the NATO summit, Maarten highlighted the importance of negotiating smartly with Trump, whose main goal is simply to win. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s proposal to present the defense budget more flexibly—3.5% plus an additional 1.5% for security—was a clever move. However, Spain initially indicated it couldn’t meet this target. As the saying goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.” Spain did, in the end, get its oil—and all parties are now on board.

Maarten’s key takeaway for the coming week? “Be the director at the table, not the actor”.

Leadership, strategy, and timing are what make the difference at the NATO negotiation table.
